On April 8th, 2007, York Memorial AME Zion Church celebrated Easter Sunday or Resurrection Day!  The    dynamic youth of our church  demonstrated the true  essence of this most precious and beloved day through a skit entitled: The Resurrection!  Ms. Margaret Staton and Mrs. Cheryl Treadwell directed our youth with their dramatizations.  William Scott, a highly gifted high school, student lead us in worship with gospel musical selections on his violin.  All to Jesus, I surrender… All to him I freely give... (Hymnal pg. 490).

Palm Sunday

“A Passion for God” (Isaiah 50:4-9) was preached by Rev. Brown. A palm was given to everyone at the end of the service.

Passion Week

During passion week York had a devotional service each morning. Devotion was conducted by church members each day.

Ash Wednesday

Rev. Kelvin Chadwick delivered the sermon on this night. On the Sunday prior to Ash Wednesday, the   congregation wrote on a torn piece of paper one thing that        prevented them from being closer to God. These pieces of paper were burnt along with last year’s palms and mixed with oil. The ashes were placed on all foreheads on this night.

Maundy Thursday Worship

A  brief devotional reading was done by everyone with the hope that some   element of the   scriptures in         Philippians 2:5-11 would speak to them personally. Holy Communion was given on this night.

Good Friday Service

The focus of Good Friday Service was on “Jesus Seven Last Words”. Members spoke on several topics: Sis. Sylvia Teel: “Father forgive them”; Sis. Veronica Stokes: “Truly I say you will be with me in Paradise”; Sis. Cheryl Burgess: “Woman behold your son”; Sis. Margaret Staton: “My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me”; Sis. Barbara Taft: “I thirst”; Sis. Loretta Pruitt: “It is finished”; Sis. Eleanor Hagans: “Father into thy hand I commit my spirit”; and Rev. Thomas Locust reflected on the Seven Last Words.

Easter Sunday Morning

Service began at 6am and ended with everyone standing on the outside at the cross. The Sunday School was presented with an Easter Program by the children of the church.
